Bulgarian Dream: Soviet-era block of flats
I posted a photo of this building yesterday as an attachement, but thought it was worth posting this one as well, partly because in hindsight I actually like it better.
Normally the photos I take and like to share express vibrance and positivity. In part its to make up for the impression that many people have of some places as being desolate and awful. The news and documentaries often dwell on the negative, so in absence of an alternative view this is all we often know about a place. Apartment blocks like this one fit in more with our view of what these countries are about.
I'm sure for many Bulgaria is in the category of "poor Eastern-block country" and an unlikely place to visit. This was my second visit. The first time around I went to Sofia and the old capital Veliko Tarnovo. Like last time I was sad to leave and know I'll be back again. Beneath the sometimes dilapidated exterior is a country with plenty of character. People with hopes, dreams and aspirations that are apparent if you take a closer look. For some reason its a country I enjoy spending time in. There's plenty to see and do. I highly recommend a visit.
