San Francisco Cable Cars & Alcatraz

Daily Photo: San Francisco Cable Cars & Alcatraz

When I'm in the United States, I can't help but feel like I'm on the set of a movie or TV show.

Many of the sights and sounds are so familiar. If you have a TV, then in a way you've grown up with them wherever you live. Add to that at least half a dozen songs that spring to mind that are about or inspired by places like San Francisco and you can't help but have the feeling that you're going back to somewhere you've been before.

Without a doubt one of my favourite things about San Francisco is the cable cars. These are powered by a series of steel cables that run in grooves under the street that the cable cars grab onto to go up a hill. Going down, gravity takes care of the work! I'm sure these would have to be among the most energy efficient public transport vehicles anywhere!

In the background you can see the famous Alcatraz Island.

Home Sweet Home

I've gotta tell you, I've lived in San Francisco for 6 years and been on this street dozens of times but never once noticed this as a possible photo. Sometimes it takes a pair of foreign eyes to see the beauty of your own home.

When I'm at home I often feel

When I'm at home I often feel the same - can be a real challenge to start to see your own country in the same way that a visitor does!
