Deep Blue: Lake Atitlan, Guatemala

Lake Atitlan - Lago de Atitlán is nestled between three volcanoes at an altitude of 1,562 m and considered to be the deepest lake in Central America.

Locals describe it as "The World's most beautiful lake" on the basis of a far more equivocal quote by Aldous Huxley: "Lake Como, it seems to me, touches on the limit of permissibly picturesque, but Atitlán is Como with additional embellishments of several immense volcanoes. It really is too much of a good thing."

On the backpacker circuit the lake is also a popular budget destination and home to some of the cheapest Spanish Language Schools in South America.
