First Class train to Budapest!

First Class train to Budapest!

Yesterday was my first day using the 15 day Global Pass from Eurail.

Todays photo is one that's of me, not taken my me! My travel buddy, Lily, has done a much better job of detailing the trip than I would (especially seeing as its 2:30am in Berlin after the midsummer festivities here) so if you want to see some photos actually taken by me, and a thorough account of the overnight ride, not to mention some Eurail/interrail info, click through to her blog post! (or click through to my full blog post for a bit more from me Including another photo...)

Seeing as I'd already spent quite a bit of time in Budapest, I thought I'd get some use out of a day's unlimited travel on European trains. This would probably sound like an ordeal to some, but I actually really enjoyed the trip - I added on a second train to Linz in Austria, with a connection on the ICE from there to Hamburg in the north of Germany. As the trip moves along, the standard of trains, and speeds increases.

The map attached shows the whole trip, but the segments were:

  • Sighsora - Budapest: 572km, 10:06 hours, ax. 57 km/h average
  • Budapest to Linz: 455km, 4:38 hours, 95 km/hr average
  • Linz to Hamburg: 938km, 8:01 hours, 117km/hr average

So in the end, I did an extended day of travel - about 2000km of travel in first class luxury, saw quite a bit of Austria and Germany go by the window and got quite a bit of photo editing done too.

Same scene, different subject & photographer!
