Golden Temple, Amritsar India

Golden Temple, Amritsar India

Amritsar in India is home to the amazing Golden Temple - the Harmandir Sahib the holiest shrine in Sikhism. Known as the golden temple because it is literally covered with gold - it is rumored to be gilded with 100 kg of pure gold.

Although there are many hotels in the city, an interesting accommodation option is the Golden Temple Hostel which provides free dormitories for foreigners. The accommodation is simple, but was also a world-first for me: A dorm guarded by a Sikh with a spear and a scimitar!

For more photos of the Golden Temple, Mainly in the daytime, take a look at my Golden Temple images at Istock, to which the above photo will hopefully soon be added!
