Medusa Head in the Basilica Cistern

Medusa Head in the Basilica Cistern Istanbul

If you want a look into the Roman underground of Istanbul, the place to go is the Basilica Cistern or Yerebatan Sarnıcı which is in Sultanahmet, very close to the Hagia Sofia and Blue Mosque.

The most unusual part of the structure are two columns that are supported by stone medusa heads - one upside-down (main blog photo for today) and the other on its side. Click through to the full blog for a few more photos of this structure which is over 1500 years old!
