Portrait of a Moroccan Child
The GF-1 with its 20mm lens is a perfect camera in this type of situation. It has some features that can be a big advantage, but not immediately obvious: The 20mm lens has a good minimum focus distance of 20cm, it focuses quite quickly and accurately, and the 2x "crop" factor means that you can shoot reasonably wide open without having unnaturally shallow depth of field. ISO400 is good enough that you don't need to worry about loosing resolution.
The size of the camera means it isn't particularly threatening, so you often get a lot more curiosity than would be the case with a DSLR equiped with fast lenses.
For those interested in seeing what this type of image looks like up-close, I've attached a 100% crop in the full blog post.
