Sea Turtle at Santa Catarina, Brazil prior to release

Sea Turtle Rescue Center Santa Catarina Island, Brazil

Today's photo is from the Sea Turtle Sanctuary run by an organisation called "Tamar" which has (one of several) a turtle rescue and awareness center on Isla Santa Catarina near Florianopolis in Brazil.

Sea Turtle Release

The area around the turtle sanctuary is a popular location for tourists. It's also the location of a small local fishing village. In April 2005 the sanctuary was set up with the aim to educate and raise awareness about the need to conserve marine turtles and to reducing the impact of fishing on those animals. As part of this aim it provides a facility that rescues injured turtles houses them for a time and re-releases them into the wild from time to time. Clearly the release is a public event, and one such release which took place last Sunday attracted a small crowd of holidaymakers and children.

What is the organization in Brazilian for sea turtle rescue?

When I was in Rio on business, a colleague showed me an exhibit in her office building with gift items for purchase to support this organization.
