St. Pauli Elbtunnel, Hamburg, Germany

When I mentioned on Facebook that I was in Hamburg, I got some tips to check out this place: The St. Pauli Elbtunnel.

So what is it? Its a 426.5 metre tunnel that goes under one of Europe's biggest rivers, the Elbe, designed to transport vehicles and passengers from one side to the other. The things that are interesting about it are: 1. that its quite old compared to similar constructions (opened in 1911) and 2. that cars are transported in and out of the tunnel by four massive lifts - the middle two of these can carry up to 10 tonnes each.

If you want to have a look at the tunnel, its free for cyclists and pedestrians, and costs about 2 euro for cars to go through. If you're passing through Hamburg, I'd have to say its a must-see!
