Faces of Bayon - Angkor, Cambodia
When they were voting for the "New 7 Wonders of the World" one of the places that missed out is Angkor in Cambodia. It really shouldn't have. While Angkor Wat is clearly the centerpiece of this amazing area, it's only one out of 1000 temples. My favorite is Bayon - which is known for its many faces, and stunning in the afternoon light!
Want to see it from above? This is one area that is interesting to see on the satellite view of google maps - just click "hybrid" or "Satellite" on the map in the right corner of this page, find the relevant marker for this page, and keep double clicking until you get close enough to see things. Apparently Angkor was the largest pre-industrial civilization in the world - covering over 1000 square kilometers and home to around 1 million people.

I loved Angkor Wat - the temples are amazing!
Love Angkor
The city of Angkor is still being studied and mapped! It's quite possible that it will cover more than 1500 square kilometers since there are hundreds and thousands of temples more spread on the east, west, north, of the main urban district! There are actually more temples that are hidden in the jungles that are much larger than most of the temples people usually go see! For example, if one travels more to the east you will encounter another lost temple called Beng Melea the 2nd largest temple ever built in the Khmer Empire and many more!
