Ice-slide in Mexico City for Christmas

Worlds biggest Ice-Skating rink... in Mexico?

Cycle-Sunday is just one of the projects that Mexico City's progressive government has come up with to change the atmosphere and reputation of the city.

When I was there around Christmas, another equally unusual project was on display. A giant Ice-Skating rink and Ice slide had been set up in the central square ("the Zocalo") for children and families to enjoy - for free. The project which took place for the first time in 2007 was clearly popular and gave the whole city a carnival-like atmosphere. Set up for the duration of December, it now appears to be an annual event that caters for around 12,000 ice-skaters each day!

In a city where poverty is common place, it was an amazing sight to see children squeeling as they went down a giant slide in the city's central square!
