Utila Honduras... "I feel like Iguana Tonight!"

Photo: 28 Jan 2009

If you're one of those rare people who has read other parts of this blog, you might have encountered a story about my first bus on the way into Honduras that stopped for a few minutes so that the driver and conductor could throw rocks at an iguana in a tree. It puzzled me at the time, but I didn't really think too much of it - and just put it down to one of those strange things that happens along the way.

Nevertheless after a few days on Utila, the reason for the stop became apparent. Food. What I think of as a pretty cool wild animal and others would consider the perfect addition to a terrarium, Hondurans look at as a good dinner.

Even though the Utilan Iguana is a protected species and has been since 1994, it doesn't seem to deter the Hondurans from hunting them, and still see the animal as fair game.

Subscribe via RSS! Up until very recently, I had no idea what RSS was, or how it worked. Now that I've discovered it, I'm a big fan. If you've never tried it you probably should try it - it basically allows you to read all your favorite websites from one page that looks a lot like your email inbox! To me its best suited for pages that you want to keep track of, but don't get updated very frequently.
